Bread Sticks

This recipe is from Nancy Allen from our Geneva, Switzerland ward cookbook.

1 T yeast
2 T sugar
3 cups flour
1 1/2 cups warm water
1/2 tsp salt
1 cube butter
garlic salt
Parmesan cheese (optional)

Dissolve yeast in warm water along with 2 T sugar.  Add flour and salt sifted together.  Mix into a dough, then knead for 3 minutes.  Let rise 10 minutes in a warm place.  Roll out into a big rectangle about 1/2 inch thick.  Melt 1 cube butter on a cookie sheet.  Cut dough into strips.  Roll in butter and lay on cookie sheet.  Sprinkle with Parmesan cheese and garlic salt.  Let rise 10 minutes more, bake at 375 F for 20 minutes.  If using a dark pan bake at 350 F for 15-20 minutes.

Alternative use of this recipe:
Mix dough as directed.  Split dough in half and roll into little balls. Melt butter and put 1/2 of the butter in  two loaf pans.  With one half of the dough, dip the little balls in the butter and then into a cinnamon sugar mixture.  Layer balls into pan so that they overlap (similar concept as monkey bread).  With the other half of the dough dip the balls in the butter, then sprinkle with garlic salt.  Put another layer of the dough balls and sprinkle again with garlic salt.  Bake at 350 F for 15-20 minutes.  Now you have a bread side for dinner and a dessert!
